Ernest L. “Ernie” Zyburt MARQUETTE – Ernest L. “Ernie” Zyburt, 88, of 1953 Orchard Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Monday morning, May 18, 2009, at his home in the loving and comforting care of his family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice. Born November 16, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Michael J. and Martha (Lewandowski) Zyburt, Ernie was raised in Chicago and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Ernie entered Northwestern University where he received his bachelor’s degree. On May 27, 1950, he married the former Joan Walley and the couple later settled in Westland. For over 52 years, Ernie was employed in the insurance industry. Ernie was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church and the Western Wayne County Conservation Association. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Ernie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan; his children, Peter (Melissa) Zyburt of Negaunee, Michele Theut of Tomahawk, WI, Jeff Zyburt of New Hudson, Greg Zyburt and Patrice “Pixie” Zyburt both of Marquette, Ben (Lori) Zyburt of Harvey, Gretchen (Graham) Crockford of Pinckney, and Heidi Wolck of Lake Linden; fifteen grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Nelson of Loveland, CO; two daughters in law, Myra Zyburt of Marquette and Nancy Zyburt of Chelsea, MI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by a son, Michael; and three sisters. Honoring Ernie’s wishes, private family services will be held. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Parkinson’s Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
