Marquette––Eva Ruth DeVerney,
82, of 1309 Cleveland Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal
life Saturday, February 23, 2008, at the home of her daughter,
Barbara, and son-in-law, Craig Hughes. Comforting care was
given by her loving caregivers, her daughter, Barbara, and
son-in-law, Craig, where she resided for the last two years,
along with the loving help of her granddaughters, Megan,
Leah, Lauren, and Tassy.
Eva was born October 24, 1925 in Phelps, Wisconsin, and
was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Cross) Hall. Eva was
raised in several foster homes around Wisconsin, graduating
from the Gillett High School in Gillett, Wisconsin. She
lived in Newberry for a brief time before moving to Marquette,
where she entered St. Luke’s School of Nursing, receiving
certification as a licensed practical nurse in 1953. On
December 5, 1953 she married George D. DeVerney and couple
began to establish their home and raise a family. During
the years of raising her family, Eva worked outside the
home, cleaning homes for many in the Marquette area. Cleaning
her own home remained as one of her leisure pursuits, along
with reading, watching western movies, and caring for her
children and grandchildren.
Eva was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church, the
Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians, and the Kateri Tekakwitha
Native American Elders Circle.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara (Craig) Hughes, and
Teresa DeVerney, both of Skandia; three sons, Wayne “Butch”
(Joyce) DeVerney of Midland, George (Cheryl) DeVerney of
Harvey, and Ronald (Joyce) Christjohn of Birnamwood, WI;
her grandchildren, Amy (Jesse) Consolatti, Sonya (Brian)
Todd, Mike MacDonald, Lindsay MacDonald, Tassy DeVerney,
Megan Hughes, Leah Hughes, Lauren Hughes, Jessica (Jeff)
McLaughlin, Emily (Kriss) Hahn, Melissa DeVerney, Becca
DeVerney, Sue (Rocky) Kaufman, Lisa Hirt, Carl Christjohn,
and Lee Christjohn; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great
great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Eva was
preceded in death by her husband, George, on May 8, 2000;
two grandsons, Jorge “Sunshine” MacDonald and
Phillip MacDonald; a sister, Ruth Bennett; and brothers,
Louis and John Hall.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday,
February 27, from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. A Mass of Christian
Burial will follow at St. Christopher Catholic Church at
1:00 pm Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Jeff Johnson as celebrant.
A traditional Native American Ceremony will follow. At Eva’s
request, granddaughter, Amy Consolatti will give a eulogy.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Cornelius DeVerney, Duane DeVerney,
Mathew DeVerney, George Metzger, Donavan Metzger, Chester
Barnett, and William Schieding. A reception for family and
friends will be held in the church fellowship hall. Spring
burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
