Marquette–– Walter Joseph
“Red” Massie, Jr., 72, of 2053 Center Street,
Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, October 9, 2007,
in a boating accident on Lake Independence.
Walter was born June 26, 1935, in Crystal Falls, a son of
Walter and Eva Massie, Sr., was raised in Crystal Falls,
and was a graduate of the Crystal Falls High School. He
served in the US Navy and returning home, was employed as
a miner and welder with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company
prior to retiring. He was a member of the Marquette Township
Volunteer Fire Department, Richard Jopling Post #44 of the
American Legion, and the former Moose Lodge. Red was an
avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was also
a member of the Marquette Senior Hockey League; still actively
playing on a regular basis.
Survivors include his wife, Eva; three daughters, Cheryl
(Richard) Plantenga of Marquette, Lori Wedal of McClenny,
FL, and Cathi (Pete) Hornbogen of Traverse City; a step-daughter,
Linda (Steve) Juzenas of Kenosha, WI; a step-son, Bill (Teri)
Rowe of Appleton, WI; his grandchildren, Patti Lingle, Michael
Plantenga, Charlie, Alexandra, Kit, and Caitlyn Hornbogen,
Angelia Hope, Crystal , Amanda, Billy, Katie, and Shane
Rowe; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Grace, Siena, and Ethan
Lingle, and Cameron Rowe.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender
Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 16, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
A Service of Remembrance will follow at 6:00 pm Tuesday
evening with Rev. Frank Ricca officiating. Inurnment will
be made at the Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s
Association or Marquette Junior Hockey.
