Marquette––- Shirley Mae “Stubby”
Swenor, 79, of 1935 Freedom Drive #B, Marquette, formerly
of 301 Genesee Street, entered eternal life Saturday morning,
June 9, 2007, at her apartment, in the comforting care of
her family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice.
Born June 3, 1928, in Marquette, a daughter of Samuel and
Florence (Rice) Carlton, Shirley was raised in Marquette
and was a 1946 graduate of the Graveraet High School. Following
high school, she worked at the former Red Owl as a cashier.
On April 3, 1948, she married Donald L. “Curly”
Swenor at St. Peter Cathedral, and together the couple established
their home and raised their family in Marquette. For a time,
Shirley operated a day care out of her home and later was
employed as a receptionist at Randy Ryoti Photography. Shirley
was a member of the Women of the Moose and Lady Trainmen.
In her leisure, she was an avid BINGO participant, enjoyed
attending her grandson, Adam’s baseball games, and
loved visiting and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl J. Swenor of Marquette;
three sons, Donald M. (Kathy) Swenor of Grand Rapids, Scott
A. (Lauri) Swenor and Brian J. (Barbara) Swenor both of
Marquette; her grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Trevor, and
Abby Swenor, and Jessi Weesen; and a soon-to-be born great-granddaughter,
Ava Swenor; a brother-in-law, William Anderson of Marquette;
sister-in-law, Lorraine Slater of Harvey; and several nieces
and nephews. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded
in death by her husband, Donald “Curly” Swenor;
grandchildren, Jessica and Jason Swenor; a sister, Corinne
Anderson; her brother, Ralph Carlton; and brother-in-law,
Clyde Slater.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday,
June 13, beginning at 4:00 pm. Funeral services will be
held in the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm with
Rev. Charles Tooman, Lake Superior Hospice chaplain, officiating.
A reception for family and friends will follow at the American
Legion. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the MGH 6th Floor Oncology
nurses, the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice, Arcadia
Health Care, Dr. Thomas Huffman, and Dr. Cary Bjork for
the wonderful care and many kindnesses extended to Shirley
and her family.
