A Memory Tribute to Richard J. Retaskie

Dear Ann and all of the Retaskie family. We at the Shelley family are deeply saddened by the passing of Dick and know how terribly, terribly this rock of a man will be missed by all that ever came in contact with him. Ann, you and Dick brought so much peace and love and understanding to our family. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dear Ann: We are so sorry Dick was taken from you so suddenly. I know how that feels. We'll always treasure our times together in these later years and in my mind's eye I can still see him sitting in class across the room from me. He was a mighty fine man. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Grace (class of '53) and Dennis Kaiser

Ann I know it is hard enough to lose someone you spent your entire adult life but it is even harder when you are blindsided. I think we all find it a little easier when it is expected and we have time for those final goodbyes. It does give comfort to know it was fast for him and he did not have one of those painful lingering deaths but for those that loved him and did not expect it it is doubly hard. I did not really get the opportunity to know him as well as I would have liked but as long as my daughter,Jennfer, and grandaughters,Amber and Autumn regarded him as father and grandfather and loved him so dearly, I know we have all lost someone special. I am here if there is anything I can do.

I can remember Dick when we hired out about the same time on the DSS&A Railroad. That was about 50 some years ago !! Our sympathies go out to the Retaskie family.

Mr. Retaskie was always very generous and kind. A wonderful example for everyone to follow. I will always remember the hospitality and fun times we had at the cottage in Big Bay, fishing, and diving for rocks with Nitro. My deepest sympathy to all of Dick's family. You have lost someone who was very special to you. May your memories bring you comfort and peace. Dick was my first "boss" when I was hired to babysit Rick and Greg one summer on the beach. I will always remember him as upbeat and happy. I'm sorry I couldn't make the funeral - it would have been nice to see all of you again.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for your recent loss. I was a student in Engadine during the 1963 and 1964 school years. I have fond memories of his classes. I had the opportunity to reminise with him and Jim Krieg at the 2000 Engadine All-Class reunion. He was surprised to hear I was still in possession of the landing net I made in one of his classes. I feel I have lost an old friend and mentor. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Richard Ozanich

City: Engadine, MI

Even though he spent a very short time in Engadine, many of his former students still considered him a friend. It was always a pleasure to run into him up in Marquette. He was one of a kind. Our thoughts are with his family and his many friends
