Marquette– Willliam O. Black, 82,
of 1010 W. Bluff Street, Apartment 14, Marquette, entered
eternal life Sunday noon, January 7, 2007, at his home,
in the comforting care of his family.
Born October 5, 1924 in Marquette, a son of Osborne and
Florence (Meyers) Black, Bill was raised in Marquette. In
1943, he entered the US Army, serving with the 1414th Army
Air Force Base Unit, Air Transport Command, during World
War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank
of corporal, having received the American Theater Service
Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal,
and the Good Conduct Medal. On January 1, 1950 he married
Hazel Mae Revord and the couple together set about establishing
their home and raising a family in Marquette’s Trowbridge
Park. Bill was employed with Lake Shore, Inc as a crane
operator for 35 years prior to his retirement. Bill was
a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church and enjoyed
playing cards and hanging out with his friends. A builder
at heart, he loved to build and construct and, through the
years, not only built the family home, but assisted family
and friends with their building projects as well.
Survivors include his daughters, Anita (Michael) Connors
of McFarland, Sonia (Lowell) Johnson and Trudy (Robert)
Williams both of Marquette, and Dorothy (Gerry) Robinson
of Harvey; his sons, William (Jan) Black Jr of Gwinn, Michael
Black of Racine, WI, Robert (Kellie) Black of Negaunee Township,
Terry (Apryle) Black of Palmer, and Fred (Denise) Black
of Skandia; 37 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; his
close friends and companions, Kathleen Kurian of Columbus,
GA, and Shirley Lindberg of Marquette; and several nieces
and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded
in death by his wife, Hazel, on June 30, 2000 after 50 years
of married life.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Christopher
Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 10, beginning at 10:00
am. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00 am Wednesday morning
with Rev. Jeff Johnson as celebrant. Inurnment will be made
in the Northland Chapel Gardens.
