Leo E. Mercure, 85, formerly of 444 1/2 Silver Creek Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Friday, August 18, 2006, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, where he had resided since February 2004.

Born June 21, 1921, in Marquette, a son of Thomas and Lumena (Houle) Mercure, Leo was a 1941 graduate of the Graveraet High School. While in high school he worked at the former Our Own Bakery. Leo served in the US Army during World War II and, following his military discharge, began a lengthy employment at the former Tonella & Rupp Furniture Store. He held a number of positions at the furniture store, working in receiving and shipping, performing furniture repair, and also working as a salesman. He then worked for a time with the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad in the car shop, doing car repair. Leo later worked with his brother, Arthur Mercure, in carpentry and construction. Leo liked the building trades and over the years was responsible for building a home and several remodeling projects. He was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, currently a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey, and a member of the Richard Jopling Post #44 of the American Legion.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Gary and Mary Mercure of Harvey, with whom he made his home. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Mercure; his sister, Florence Mercure; and brothers, Arthur, Henry, Archie, and Albert Mercure.

Graveside services will be held at the Holy Cross Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, August 22, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ben Paris officiating. Veteran’s honors will be accorded by members of Richard Jopling Post #44 of the American Legion.
