Arthur William “Art” Short, 84, formerly of Greenfield Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Thursday morning, July 27, 2006, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, where he had resided since October 2005.
Art was born to William Alonzo Short and Lada (Caron) Short on February 1, 1922, at the, then, St. Mary’s Hospital in Marquette. As a boy and a young man, he worked at Bancroft Dairy Farm and for Cliffs Dow Charcoal Briquette Factory. A veteran of World War II, Art served in the Army Infantry in the European Theatre of Operations. On his return from the service, he worked on a dairy farm in Wisconsin until family circumstances required him to return to Marquette. In 1951, he married June Kiser, who has remained the love of his life. Art worked for Cliffs Dow in the packaging department until the plant closed, then was employed by the Marquette School System as a custodian at Silver Creek Elementary School until his retirement in 1987. Always generous and open-hearted, Art worked with several charities and helped out with the Boy Scouts and the Lion’s Club, and is fondly remembered for the many quiet acts of kindness he did throughout the community.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, June (Kiser) Short; a daughter, Sherry (Dan) Stegner; four step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Violet (Short) Vennard; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael William Short; a sister, Marie (Short) Vennard; and a brother, Chester Short.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and at the church on Sunday one hour prior to services. Funeral services will be held at the Trenary United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 30, at 3:00 pm with Rev. Irene White officiating. Burial will be made in the Mathias Township Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Arthur’s name to the charity of donor’s choice.
