Marion Potes
Resided in Marquette, MI
Died July 5, 2006

Marion Rose Potes, nee lackey, 81, entered eternal life July 5, 2006, at her home in the loving care of her family. Born January 12, 1925 in Detroit, to Vincent and Olga Lackey, Marion Rose was named after her two grandmothers, Marie Sarnowsky and Rosalie Lackey. Marion grew up in Detroit and Dearborn, and attended Gethsemene Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed. Marion was a member of Covenant Lutheran Church, Detroit, where she was an active member of the Companionship Club.  She graduated from Western High School in 1943. Marion worked at the J. L. Hudson Co. in downtown Detroit and for the Detroit Bank and Trust in downtown Detroit during World War II.

In 1946, Marion married Van H. Potes. They lived in the city until 1976 when Van retired. Marion continued to work as a bookkeeper until 1988, when she retired from the Warren-Wells Manufacturing Company.

Marion was a great cook and made wonderful meals for family and friends. She is remembered for special cakes at holidays and birthdays and for creating what she named “cowboy milk,” so her oldest son would drink milk as a little boy. Marion also enjoyed gardening, collecting dolls and unique jewelry. Marion will also be remembered by her loved ones and friends as one who loved to do crossword puzzles, a beautiful night sky, wildflowers and nature, and her family. Her husband, Van H. Potes; her mother, Olga Lackey; and her father, Vincent Lackey preceded her in death. Marion is survived by her son David Hale Potes, daughter Carol Ann Hatch (Chuck), daughter Susan Louise Michels (David), and son Thomas Arthur Potes (Lynn). She also leaves behind nine grandsons, Neil, Aron, Troy, Dustin, Nathan, Eric, Luke, Jake, and Josh, one granddaughter, Marion’s namesake, Sara Rose, and one grand daughter-in-law, Rebekah. Marion’s grandchildren had special nicknames for her, lovingly calling her Gramcracker or Grimace. Marion is also survived by her brother Myron Lackey (Ellen), sister Barbara Ambrose, and brother Vincent Lackey.

Marion passed away at home, in Marquette, Michigan, surrounded by loved ones, after a very long and strong battle with cancer.
