Frank Oberstar

Frank Oberstar, 87, of 220 Silver Creek Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, April 12, 2006, at his home, in the comforting care of his family.

Frank was born January 13, 1919 in Watersmeet, a son of Frank and Anna (Tauses) Oberstar, and was raised at the family farm in Trenary. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army and being honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. On July 3, 1948 he married Bernice Viau and together the couple established their home and raised their family in Marquette and later Harvey. Frank was self-employed as a logger and then as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for A. Lindberg and Sons, Inc for many years, retiring in 1981. In retirement, he liked to keep busy helping his son, Chuck, at Oberstar Excavating, relishing every moment of operating a piece of heavy equipment. In his leisure, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding through the woods on his 4-wheeler, and attending horse pulling competitions.

Frank was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church and Operating Engineers Local 324.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Bernice; two sons, Chuck (Janet) Oberstar and David (Cheryl) Oberstar both of Marquette; his granddaughter, Amy (Daniel) Berandt of Marquette; great-granddaughters, Kailey and Kaitlyn Berandt; a brother, Jim (Barbara) Oberstar of Traunik; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Davis of Marquette, LaVerne (Tom) Simpson of Chicago, IL, and Shirley Marshall of Cucamonga, CA; a brother-in-law, Donald Viau of Allen Park; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mollie and Elizabeth Oberstar; and three brothers, John, Robert, and Joseph Oberstar.

Friends may call at St. Louis the King Catholic Church, Harvey, on Monday, April 17, beginning at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6:00 pm Monday evening with Rev. Ben Paris, pastor, as celebrant. Frank’s immediate family will serve as his escorts.

Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
