Dorothy Schwemin

Dorothy May Schwemin, 90, formerly of 8 Fairway Drive, Marquette, entered eternal life Monday evening, February 13, 2006, at the Norlite Nursing Center.

Born March 24, 1915 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Lew and Bessie (Bowman) Niles, Dorothy was a lifelong Marquette resident.  On June 30, 1932 she married Frank H. Schwemin, and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family.  Frank and Dorothy also opened their home to a number of foster children over the years.  A homemaker, she enjoyed craftwork and playing cards, and throughout the years was a member of a number of area craft and card clubs.  She and her husband also were involved in square dancing for over 30 years, with Frank serving as a caller for 15 of those years.  They taught round dancing and were members of the Whirl Away Square Dancing Club and the Circle Four Square Dancing Club.  Dorothy was a 60 year member of St. Michael Catholic Church, a member of the church’s Altar Society, and the Royal Neighbors of America. 

A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by two daughters, Darlene (Walter “Chick”) Koski of Marquette and Barbara (Ron) Streholski of Fond du Lac, WI; her grandchildren, James (Loraine) Koski, Karolyn LaFayette, Melanie (Dan) Coats, Marc Koski, Amy (David) Cardinal, Cindy (John) Dorn, and Greg (Kerri) Sharp; great-grandchildren, Denielle Meister, Nicholas LaFayette, Courtney Schramm, Mallory and Sydney Coats, Bradley Koski, Lindsay Holman, Chelsea Cardinal, and Jakob Dorn; great great-grandchildren, Caden LaFayette and Austin Meister; a half-brother, Thomas (Christine) Niles of Gwinn; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Schwemin in 1987; by her twelve year old son, Robert Schwemin in 1945; and a sister, Helen Vick

Friends may call at St. Michael Catholic Church on Thursday, February 16, beginning at 5:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 7:00 pm Thursday evening with Rev. Greg Heikkala as celebrant.  Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Norlite Nursing Center Patient Activity Fund, 701 Homestead, Marquette, MI 49855.
