Bernice Bocklund

Died November 15, 2005

Bernice R. (Fassbender) Bocklund, 87, of 1650 Grandview Drive, Marquette, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 15, 2005, at her home.

Born August 9, 1918, she was a life-long resident of Marquette.  She was the daughter of the late Louis and Louise (Doll) Fassbender.  Bernice and her late husband, Henry, owned the B and B Furnace Company and the Queen City Motel for many years prior to their retirement.  The couple enjoyed over 30 years of retirement, spending winters in Mesa, AZ and summers at home in Marquette.  Bernice enjoyed being with her family, cooking and baking…especially her famous carrot bars… square dancing, playing cards, gardening, quilting, and scrapbooking.  She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. 

A loving wife and mother, and proud grandmother to three generations, she is survived by:

Two daughters: Pam (Jim) Grundstrom and Marlene (David) Menze both of Marquette

Four sons: Dale (Carol) Bocklund of Casa Grande, AZ; Duane Bocklund of Marquette; Dean (Sharon) Bocklund of Ishpeming: and Dennis (Ann) Bocklund of Marquette

18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 8 great great-grandchildren

Her sisters: Florence Greenleaf; Irene (Ray) Niemi; Marilyn Niemiand Elsie Nicholls

Brother: George Fassbender

Many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Bernice was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Bocklund in 1979; brothers, Walter, Louis Jr, Ernie, and Roy Fasssbender; and a sister, Clara Young.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on Friday, November 18, beginning at 10:00 am.  Funeral services will be held in the church at 11:00 am Friday with Rev. Steve Hulke, pastor, officiating.  A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall.  Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.  Bernice’s children will serve as her escorts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1700 W. Fair Avenue, Marquette, MI, or the Lake Superior Hospice Association, 326 N. Front Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
