John Powers

John J. “Jack” Powers, 89, of 327 E. Park Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday evening, October 23, 2005, at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, where he had resided since October 12.

Jack was born February 12, 1916, in Marquette, the son of Patrick J. and Elizabeth (Wall) Powers, and was a lifelong resident. He was a 1936 graduate of the Graveraet High School and, following graduation, worked at several jobs. On February 22, 1941 he married Julia S. Lampi in Marquette and, in November, entered the US Army. Jack served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations with Company A of the 813th Engineers Aviation Battalion, and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal in 1945. He returned to Marquette and resumed employment with the A & P Food Store, continuing a career of service that would span over forty years. Jack retired in 1977 as produce manager. Jack was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Richard Jopling Post #44 of the American Legion. In his leisure, Jack enjoyed coin collecting and visiting with his friends at the American Legion during his daily visits.

Grandchildren: Christopher (Audrea) Powers of Arlington, TX; Andrea (Paul) Reid of Fort Worth, TX

Great-grandchildren: Senia and Mallorie Powers of Arlington, TX

Sister-in-law: Vieno S. Maves of Marquette

Special nieces: Julia (Kenneth) Liubakka of Harvey and Bonnie (Richard) Reedy of Sterling, VA

Several other nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rita Nichols; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Maves.

Due to construction at St. Michael Church, friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Thursday, October 27, beginning at 1:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will be held in the church fellowship hall. Entombment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
