Melvin K. “Weasel” Brunelle, Sr., 68, of 1203 Spruce Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday morning, October 14, 2005, at his home, in the care and comfort of his family and the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Mel was born January 19, 1937, in Marquette, the son of Fred J. and Norma A. (Desautelle) Brunelle, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On April 26, 1956 he married Joyce E. Peterson in National Mine and together the couple made their home and raised their family in Marquette. Mel worked with his father as a carpenter for many years, retiring in 1984 due to ill health. Over the years, Mel’s life revolved around the hockey rink. For many years, he played hockey, coached junior hockey, and was a trainer for the Marquette Iron Rangers. He especially enjoyed the hockey road trips and traveling with the team. His keen hockey and skating interests kept him a supporter and enthusiastic fan of his sons’ hockey activities and his daughter’s figure skating skills. He always enjoyed the ice and was never far from it.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Joyce; his daughter, Janice (William) Black of Ishpeming; sons, Melvin K. “Bernie” (Kathy) Brunelle Jr and Dale Brunelle both of Marquette; his grandchildren, Jason (Courtney) Black, Brian, Dale, and Keith Black, and Laura Brunelle; great-grandchildren, Hanna, Desteney, and Tyler Black; a special niece, Betty Fortin of Marquette; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Paul and Laura Croschere and Shirley Lisa of Ishpeming. Mel was preceded in death by his parents.
