James Scullion

James Joseph Scullion, Sr., 84, of 303 Jonathan Carver Road, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, September 4, 2005 at Marquette General Hospital.

Born December 9, 1920 in Salem, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Helen (Maley) Scullion, Jim was raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and was a graduate of Salamanca High School, Salamanca, New York. He attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York where he received his BA in English and History and MA in Latin American History. Jim served in Army Intelligence during both World War II and the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He served as chief communications officer at the first UN Conference and Japanese Peace Conference.

Jim was employed in the railroad industry for 48 years. His career included working for the Erie Railroad, Erie Lackawanna Railroad, Chicago Short Line Railroad, and the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad. His collective railroad assignments included: ticket agent, telegraph operator, dispatcher, market and cost analyst, inspector of operations, trainmaster, general superintendent, vice president and president. Jim also served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and as Chairman of the Board of Lasco Development Corporation. He retired in 1986 as President and CEO of the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad.

Always active in community affairs, Jim’s current affiliations include: director, Michigan Iron and Steel Industry Museum; chairman of the Marquette Public Works Department Advisory Committee; director of AMCAB; Marquette County EDC board member; member of Richard Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion; and a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church.

Former affiliations include: Founder and past president of Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad Retirees Association; treasurer, Marquette County Historical Society; Marquette Board of Light and Power board member; MARQTRAN board member; Air Force Association; Chicago Traffic Club; Railroad Superintendent’s Association; the Marquette Club; Marquette Golf and Country Club; Marquette Ambassadors; board member and president of the Marquette Chamber of Commerce; Union League Club of Chicago; Detroit Athletic Club; director, Michigan Railroads Association; director Gwinn State Savings Bank; director Miner’s First National Bank and Trust; Operation Action UP executive committee; MDOT Rail Advisory Council; Northern Michigan University Development Fund trustee; Commission on the Future of NMU member; member and director of American Short Line Railroad Association; chairman of Boy Scouts of America Hiawatha Chapter; and director of Marquette County Chapter of Big Brothers of America. Jim also spent many hours volunteering at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Grandchildren: Meghan Scullion; Sean (Meghan) Cassidy; Timothy (Tiffany) Scullion; Liam Scullion; Jennifer (Hugo) Munoz; Zachary Boyle; Ronald Olson; James Olson; Courtney Johnson; Andrea Woodward and Kevin Woodward

Great-grandchildren: Tarryn; Tara; Kaya; Kaylan; Kara; Nicholas; Chelsea; Dominick; Skye and Sheldon.

Sisters: Audrey (Duane) Durphy of Getzville, NY and Margaret Cannon of Hornell, NY.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathe Cassidy; and sisters, Mary Rita Scullion, Joanne Dolecki and Patricia Flanigan.

Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with prayer services at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church on Thursday, September 8, at 11:00 am. Co-celebrants will be Rev. Alex Sample, Rev. Ben Paris, and Rev. Lawrence Gauthier. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim’s grandchildren along with honorary pallbearers, Melvin Rossway, Dwayne Nygard, Gary Bantle, Julius Larsson, Joseph McDoniel and Steve Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bay Cliff Health Camp or St. Christopher’s Catholic Church.
