Richard Sandstrom

Richard E. “Dick” Sandstrom, 75, of 214 Newberry Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday afternoon, September 7, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital, shortly after admittance.

Born February 3, 1930 in Detroit, a son of Ernest and Mary (Creten) Sandstrom, Dick moved with his family to Gladstone as an infant. He was raised in Gladstone and later entered the US Air Force where he served from 1947 to 1949, receiving an honorable discharge due to disability. While in the Air Force, he completed his high school education and later attended Western Michigan University for two years. On June 21, 1952 he married Patricia Joy Olive in Ann Arbor and together the couple made their home and raised their family in Marquette. Dick was employed as a clerk with the US Postal Service for over 21 years, retiring in 1983. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed tennis, and was very devoted to his family. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and was a life member of Marquette County Chapter 22 of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Theresa (Bradford) Schaedig of Tega Cay, SC and Annie Roberts and her companion, Sue Smallridge, of Ishpeming; two sons, Richard Sandstrom of Gwinn and Ronald (Linda) Sandstrom of Marquette; his grandchildren, Teshannon, Thea, and Trenna Schaedig, Taylor (Brian) Houser, James and Maja Sandstrom, Candace Emard, and David (Jennifer) Emard; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Malachi Houser, and Ethan Emard; a sister, Margaret (James) Gibbs of Gladstone; and a sister-in-law, Mary Sandstrom of Gladstone.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a son, Stephen “Gooch” Sandstrom in 1990; a brother, Robert Sandstrom; and sisters, Cathy, Alice, and Mary Alice.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, September 12, beginning at 3:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 5:00 pm Monday in the funeral home with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo officiating. A dessert reception for family and friends will be held in St. Peter Cathedral Hall following the service. Inurnment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
