Hazel Longtine

Hazel M. Longtine, 87, of 329 Lost Creek Drive, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday evening, May 6, 2005, at her home, in the comfort and care of her family and the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Born March 17, 1918 in Marquette, a daughter of Thomas T. and Pearl M. (Billings) Glass, Hazel was raised in Marquette and remained a lifelong resident.  On October 13, 1934 she married Jacob Nevala and the couple set about establishing their home.  Jacob died in 1944 while serving his country during World War II.  Hazel married Francis E. Longtine on September 6, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1980.  A homemaker for most of her life, Hazel had worked outside the home for many businesses in the area and, for many years, was employed in the Food Service Department at Northern Michigan University.  Hazel was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church, a member of the Women’s Benefit Association, and a member of the Harvey TOPS Club.  She also enjoyed playing cards and had been a member of several cribbage leagues throughout the years.

A loving mother, proud grandparent, and sister, she is survived by three daughters, Donna (Robert) Boyer of Marquette, Nancy Booker of Orlando, FL, and Francine (James) Hemmila of Negaunee; a son, Michael “Mickey” (Gail) Nevala of Marquette; her grandchildren, Michael Boyer, Christine Mattocks, Michaeleen (Keith) Reise, Janice (Charles) Spencer, Charlene (Earl) Davis, Karen (Randy) Cothran, James (Elena) Hemmila, and Michael Hemmila; great-grandchildren, Danielle, Jessica, Tonii, Olivia, Joshua, Joel, Sasha, Shanelle, and K.C; a brother, Thomas (Carol) Glass of Marquette; three sisters-in-law, Mary ”Tootie” Washburn, Betty Washburn, and Jean Washburn all of Marquette; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husbands, Hazel was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Rivord and Edith Bourdage; and brothers, James Glass, Donald, Gale, and Leon Washburn; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Rivord and Clarence Bourdage.

Friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Thursday, May 12, beginning at 10:00 am.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Thursday in the church with Rev. Alex K. Sample as celebrant.  A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall.  Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery with James D. Hemmila, Michael F. Hemmila, Michael R. Boyer, Christine Mattocks, and Karen Ann Cothran serving as escorts

The family would like to express their appreciation to Hazel’s friends at Lost Creek, the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice, Faye and Bill Belmore, and special caregiver, Linda Carlson, for the many kindnesses extended to Hazel and her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to UP Home Health and Hospice or St. Christopher Catholic Church.
