Ludwig “Lud” Laurich, 97, of 1000 W. Fair Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life early Saturday morning, April 2, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital.
Lud was born November 9, 1907 in Losti Potek, Yugoslavia, a son of John and Fredricka Laurich, and was the eldest of ten children. The family moved to the U.S. in 1912, settling first in Boniface, then relocating to a farm in Big Bay. Lud’s dad worked the farm and also at lumber camps, a trade he would pass down to his first-born. Lud left school at an early age to work with his family. However, he worked hard to educate himself and always liked to read and learn new things. He worked hard on the farm and in the lumber camps. The woods became his favorite place and chopping wood his favorite activity. In 1938 he married Esther M. Manner and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. In 1944 Lud opened Lud’s Service Station on the corner of Lincoln and College Avenue, putting the wood business behind for a while. The business did well for many years, but Lud kept up the wood work behind the scenes. He built every inch of the family home on West Fair Avenue, but always admired his woodpile, culled from trees at the family camp in Skandia. He continued to chop wood into his 90’s. Lud was also known to be an avid fisherman and boater, spending long days on Lake Superior. He was quite a musician, an accomplished accordion player, a lover of music, and loved to sing.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
A loving husband, devoted father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Esther; his daughter, Karen (Christopher) Baker of Skandia; two sons, Conrad (Marilyn) Laurich of Austin, TX, and Larry (Louise) Laurich of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Steve, Richard, Kelly, John, Kimberly, Jeffery, Linda, Bradley, Gregory, Sandra, Mark, and Marie Laurich, Nicole Meloche, Christopher and Jessica Baker; 19 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Cram of Harvey, Frances Tolland of Toledo, OH, and Christine (Eugene) LaChappelle of Big Bay; two brothers, Robert Laurich of Halfway Location and Louis (Sharon) Laurich of Harvey; sisters-in-law, Peggy Laurich of Iron Mountain and Hazel Laurich of Lansing; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Lud was preceded in death by a son, John Laurich; grandson, Jason Laurich; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Joseph Mohar; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Katherine Laurich; brothers, John Laurich, Frank, and Charles Laurich; sister-in-law, Hazel Laurich; and brothers-in-law, Joseph Tolland and Hiram Cram.
