Harold Lee Peterson, 76, of 1095 Ontario Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday morning, March 27, 2005, at home, in the comforting care of his family and the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Harold was born December 21, 1928 in Marquette, at home, a son of Simon and Mildred (Wallin) Peterson, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. He was a 1946 graduate of the John D. Pierce High School. On September 2, 1950 he married Mary Lou Richer and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. While in high school, and following high school, Harold worked on the Joe Block Ore Boat shoveling coal and the Pioneer Ore Boat as a deck watcher. Harold then worked for a short time for Bancroft Dairy and the Cycle Delivery Company. Harold spent the majority of his working career as a route supervisor for Bunny Bread retiring in 1991 with 40 years of service. Harold was a life member of Messiah Lutheran Church, a Marquette Township Board Trustee, a member of Moose Lodge #1059, Masonic Temple Blue Lodge & Shriners, a charter member of the Marquette Township Lions Club, member of Marquette Noon Lions Club, Big Bay Lions Club, the Marquette Range Engineers, the Wells Vagabond Camping Club, and the Michigan Uppers. In his leisure he enjoyed trailer camping, gardening, cooking, and making pasties & potato sausage, which he was so well known for.
A loving and devoted father, proud grandparent, great-grandparent, and brother, he is survived by three daughters, Linda (David) Winslow and Sharon (Michael) Fries both of Marquette, and Jan (Joe) Wilke of Marinette, WI; two sons, Steven (Julie) Peterson and Gary (Tina) Peterson both of Marquette; his grandchildren, Amy Winslow, Natalie (Jason) Campbell, Shawn (Bonnie) Greenleaf, Aaron Winslow, Andrew Winslow, Jessica Wilke, Adam Winslow, Cassie Fries, Jared Wilke, Jenna Wilke, Cory Fries, Ashley Peterson, and Calvin Fries; great-grandchildren, Freya and Cooper Holferty and Bryce Campbell; one sister, G. Shirley Peterson of Marquette; a brother, Albert Peterson of Zephyrhills, FL, and several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou on January 15, 2005; his parents, Simon and Mildred Peterson; and two brothers, Carl E. Peterson and Alden S. Peterson.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday, April 8, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and one hour prior to services on Saturday. Funeral services will be held in the Fassbender Funeral Home on Saturday, April 9, at 11:00 am with Rev. Paul Olson, UP Home Health and Hospice chaplain, and Pam Parkkila, director of UP Home Hospice, officiating. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. Escorts will be Harold’s grandsons. The family invites relatives and friends to the family home on Saturday, April 9, at 4:00 pm, for a gathering in celebration of Harold’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the MAPS Education Foundation Harold and Mary Lou Peterson Scholarship Fund, 1201 W. Fair Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855.
