Evelyn Hillier

Evelyn “Ev” Hillier, 85, of 436 McMillan Street, Marquette, entered eternal life early Sunday morning, March 27, 2005, at her home. 

Born January 25, 1920 in Marquette, a daughter of Alphonse and Frances (Berry) Bolduc, Ev was a lifelong Marquette resident.  On January 25, 1938 she married Raymond D. Hillier and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family, which would eventually include fourteen children.  The coffee pot was always on in Ev’s kitchen and it was a favorite gathering place for relatives, friends, neighbors, and strangers.  Everyone was made to feel at home.  Ev cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a mother to all.  In May of 1968, Ev was honored by being chosen “Mother of the Year” by the publication, Marquette Mirror.  Ev was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.

A loving mother and devoted grandparent, she is survived by her children, David (special friend, Bonnie) Hillier of Otsego, Daniel (Joan) Hillier and Thomas (Joy) Hillier both of Marquette, Kathleen (Jon) Schultz of Donnybrook, ND, Dennis (Diane) Hillier of Gwinn, Howard (Linda) Hillier and Shirley (Lloyd) Lehtomaki both of Marquette, Walter Hillier of Clear Lake, WA, Lynn Larson, Terrance (Debbie) Hillier, and Charles (Janice) Hillier of Marquette, Beverly (Tony) Certo of Phoenix, AZ, Joe (Cindy) Hillier and Tim (Patti) Hillier of Marquette; forty grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren; special friends, Betty Murray and Ann Sarka; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Ev was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond D. Hillier in 1986; daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Hillier; son-in-law, Thomas Larson; brothers, Charles and Howard Bolduc; a sister, Mildred Juneau; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive relatives and friends in the Gathering Space at St. Peter Cathedral on Friday, April 1, beginning at 12:00 noon.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Friday afternoon in the Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo, rector, as celebrant.  A reception for family and friends will follow in Cathedral Hall.  Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.  Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Ev’s grandchildren, Kurt, Terry, Chris, Matt, Jim, Andrew, Ben, and Christopher Hillier, Glen and Randy Lehtomaki.  Honorary escorts will be Troy, Jeff, David, Jim, and Mike Hillier, Tom Tooles, Jerry and John Abbott, Travis, Nicholas, and Allan Certo.
