Betty Violet Andrew, 81, of 734 Lost Creek Drive, Marquette, entered eternal life early Wednesday morning, March 16, 2005, at the Norlite Nursing Center, where she had resided since October of 2004.
Born March 24, 1923 in Marquette, a daughter of Ernest and Caroline (Jensen) Yelle, Betty was raised in Sands Township and Marquette, and was a 1942 graduate of the Negaunee High School.
A resident of Marquette since 1964, Betty previously resided in California, Washington, and Maryland. She was employed with the former Jupiter and K-Mart Department Stores as a cashier, retiring in 1988 after over 20 years of service. She always had a ready smile to greet customers and became known to many as the “Jupiter Lady.”
Over the years, she also was an Avon representative and performed volunteer services at Marquette General Hospital. She was an avid cribbage player and belonged to several leagues in the Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Marquette areas, as well as, card clubs with friends and relatives. Betty was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, often attending St. Christopher Catholic Church due to proximity to her home, and a member of the Danish Sisterhood of America. Betty was liked by all who knew her. She remained active and independent up until the last year of life.
Survivors include her daughters, Katherine A. (Bruce) Dupras of Marquette and Linda G. Smith of Los Angeles, CA; sons, Bruce A. Smith and Richard P. (Lucy LaFaive) Smith both of Marquette; her grandchildren, Jennifer A. Dupras of Naperville, IL and Jason D. Dupras of Marquette; two sisters-in-law, Esther and Patricia Yelle both of Sands; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her second husband, Norman Andrew; a sister and brother-in-law, Olive and George Noel; and brothers, Clarence, Leonard, and Merle “Curly” Yelle.
Friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:00 pm Wednesday evening in the church with Rev. Alex K. Sample as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In honor of Betty, the family will be wearing purple, Betty’s signature color. Others are invited to do the same. Purple ribbons will be provided.
Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be son-in-law, Bruce Dupras; grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer Dupras; and nephews, Randy Yelle and Dennis Grim.
