Elizabeth M. Weiland, 90, of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday afternoon, January 15, 2005, at the Four Chaplains Nursing Care Center in Westland, where she had resided for the past two weeks.
She was born April 9, 1914 in Marquette, a daughter of John and Mary (Stenglein) Cardoni, and was raised in Marquette. She was a 1931 graduate of the Bishop Baraga High School. On September 30, 1933 she married Carl R. Weiland in Marquette, and remained a Marquette area resident for most of her life. A homemaker, and member of St. Peter Cathedral, she enjoyed craftwork, crocheting, and playing cards, especially cribbage. She had been a member of several Marquette cribbage leagues throughout the years.
Survivors include her son-in-law, Charles “Lee” Smith of Garden City; her grandchildren, Charles (Sheila) Smith Jr, Rebecca Smith, and Christine (Robert) Carter; great-grandchildren, Nathan Smith, Noah Smith, Hannah Smith, Nicholas Carter, and Joseph Carter; two brothers, Francis (Carol) Cardoni of Lake Oswego, OR and Phillip (Hazel) Cardoni of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Carl R. Weiland in 1969; her daughter, Kay E. Smith on December 11, 2004; and by two brothers, Jack and George Cardoni.
A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at St. Peter Cathedral in June and will be announced. Inurnment will be made in the Park Cemetery. The Fassbender Funeral Home is seving the family.
