Robert William Thams, 77, of 83 McClure Dam Road, Negaunee Township, entered eternal life Friday afternoon, October 1, 2004, at Marquette General Hospital.
Bob was born December 29, 1926 in Fargo, North Dakota, the youngest of three sons to Dr. S.N. and Helen (Hoover) Thams. He was raised in Plymouth, Michigan and attended high school at the Georgia Military Academy, graduating in 1944. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant stationed in Germany during the post World War II occupation. He later served in the Korean Conflict as an infantry officer and an advisor in the Vietnam War. During his Army career he also received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He retired from military duty in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel with twenty-three years of service. After retiring from the Army, Bob obtained his graduate degree in Education from the University of Michigan and became a History/Government teacher at Plymouth-Canton High School, retiring in 1984. During his retirement he lived in East Tawas, MI and Kerrville, TX, recently returning to Michigan to reside with his son, Jim and family in Negaunee Township.
Bob was preceded in death by Marilyn F. Thams, who passed on November 1, 1994. Marilyn was his wife of 29 years and mother of Jim (Jodi) Thams of Negaunee Township, MI, and Bill (Denette) Thams of Concord, NC.
Bob is survived by former wife, Lucille H. Thams of Canyon City, CO, mother of surviving children, Karen Thams of Agoura, CA, Paul Thams of Berlin, Germany, Marta Thams of Canyon City, CO, Peter (Paula) Thams of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Meg (Alan Nealy) Thams of Denver, CO.
Bob is also survived by his current wife, Margaret Thams, of Austin, TX and his stepdaughter, Ann Jinkins of Austin, TX; ten grandchildren; brother, William Thams of Midland TX; sister-in-law, Gretchen Thams of Auburn Hills, MI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and second wife, Marilyn, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Thams, daughter, Frederica Thams, and brother Paul Thams.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 5, beginning at 12:00 noon. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. Lawrence Jones, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Inurnment will be made in a family plot at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Piqua, Ohio in the spring. |
