Marion Joan Schwemin,
MARQUETTE – Marion Joan (Peterson) Schwemin, age 83, of 407 Blemhuber Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, January 29, 2012, at her home, with her loving children at her side. Born August 1, 1928 in Marquette, a daughter of Charles and Ethel (Fagerberg) Peterson, Marion attended the John D. Pierce School and graduated from the Graveraet High School in 1946. She worked for a time as an operator with Michigan Bell Telephone and, on November 1, 1947, married Everett E. “Pete” Schwemin at St. Peter Cathedral. The couple purchased their home on Blemhuber Avenue and raised their family there while Marion continued working at Michigan Bell. She was later employed by the Northwoods Supper Club and then the Garden Room Restaurant as a baker in their kitchen operations. She retired in 1986. The Schwemin home was the center of activity for many years for not only Marion, Pete, and children, but for an extended family as well. Family holiday celebrations were festive and included everyone. Weekly Friday night card games were always high-spirited affairs with the children often complaining not being able get to sleep because of the antics of their parents, aunts, uncles, and friends. Pete and Marion were very devoted to their children and weekend trips to the family camp on 16 Mile Lake near Chatham were adventures to be looked forward to. Marion enjoyed knitting, reading, and, in later years, visiting the casino. She made herself available to her children and grandchildren, always putting them first before herself. A loving mother, proud grandma, great-grandma, and friend, she is survived by her children, Michael (Beth) Schwemin of Harvey, Gregory (Carol) Schwemin of Muskegon, Paul Schwemin of Marquette, Mark (Vickie) Schwemin of Beaver Grove, and Debra (Joe) Gregorich of Ishpeming; her wonderful grandchildren, Matt (Tana), Andy, Michelle, Sam (Carissa), Randy (fiancée, Dave), Chelsea, Megan, and Brennen Schwemin; great-grandchildren, Merrick, Ayla, Reegan, Mason, and Zachary; her in-laws, Anna (Robert) Fletcher, Ardell Schwemin, Richard (Joanne) Schwemin, and Dennis (Roseann) Keller all of Marquette; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her husband, “Pete” in 2001; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Ivan Hansen, Irene and Albert Howard, Helen and Dean Herrick; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Arnold and Blanche Peterson, Lowell and Geraldine Peterson, and Charles Peterson. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Thursday, February 2, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Services will follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. Leon Jarvis, Marquette General Hospital chaplain presiding. Inurnment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Marion’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary escorts.
