Sophie V. Kuiawa,
BIG BAY – Sophie V. Kuiawa, 87, of DePere, Wisconsin, formerly of Big Bay, and Hurley, Wisconsin, entered eternal life on April 14, 2011. She was born on November 16, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Joseph and Mary (Kozil) Klusek. In November of 1953 she married Basil Kuiawa in Wakefield. Sophie was a devoted mother and had a very strong Catholic faith. She was very involved in the Catholic communities of Big Bay and Hurley. Sophie enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and knitting, especially wool socks. Survivors include her six children, Maureen Kuiawa, Rosie (John) Kuiawa-Beacham, Frank (Karen) Kuiawa, Cathy Kuiawa, John Kuiawa, and Cheryl (Randy Burger) Kuiawa; grandson, Kyle Kuiawa; good friends, Jenny Kubiak, Kim and Laura Cain; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil; her brothers and sisters, as well as other friends and relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Bay on Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 am with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber as celebrant. Inurnment will be made in the Powell Township Cemetery, Big Bay. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund is being established.
